Rare Diseases Making A Comeback?
Other officials noted that cholera and typhoid are
re-emerging on the outskirts of
Europe. In Russia, for example, a typhoid outbreak
occurred recently when sewage
leaked into drinking water. In Latvia, the WHO said
about half of the rural population
relies on shallow wells that do not meet purity
standards. The WHO estimates that,
overall, one in seven Europeans do not have access to
safe drinking water.
The agency also says climate changes linked to
global warming are allowing the
mosquitoes that carry malaria and dengue fever to breed
further north (BBC Online,
15 Jun).
