Update from the Coordination Committee INCHES - October 1998

Several organisations have been showing interest in the formation of the international platform. In this update I would like to continue with the list that I prepared in January with the first interested organizations, the list that was produced during the meeting in Amsterdam and with additional contacts since then. My suggestion is to everyone to make this list complete with additional organizations that we can contact in the coming months. As you know the text for the final Proposal for the Network is almost ready. The version that is open for comments can be found on the website of our Dutch Association and the site of UMINFO.

So the questions for this moment are:

  • add organizations or individuals to the list of interested participants;
  • contact possible persons or organizations and forward them to someone of the coordinating committee.

There has been one change there: Liz Blackburn from EPA was nominated in Amsterdam for the time being, until someone from EPA was selected for the coordinating committee. We are happy to announce that Martha Shimkin also from EPA from the Office of International Activities is the new person in the coordinating committee.

About the meeting in 1999

As International Network it will be important to make clear what the issues are that we (together with the children) regard as the main problems. The suggestion I made was to have this meeting in spring 1999 to come up with a list of possible points of action in complementation of the work that will be done for the European Ministerial Conference in London (June '99).

There will be many more items to be identified for different regions, countries, for different groups in society, and for different areas of our range of topic. Once we have a more or less complete list of relevant items, we can start to work on the main issues. Then we can start to support each other with knowledge, with activities, with public information etc. The main objectives will be, in my opinion, to disseminate information (about studies, new problems etc.), to establish the topic of Children's Environmental Health as an important issue amongst organisations, institutes and ministries and finally to coordinate research and policy in this field. Here is the list of organisations that have been giving their support of the idea to form such a network or council. The next step will be for these organizations to sign up for the official proposal for the International Network. It's structure should be formed in such a way that nobody will feel to be left out. As we will have NGO's, GO's and IGO's cooperating together on this important issue of Children's Environmental Health and Safety, the structure should be carefully chosen. If anyone could help us draft the organisational structure, please come forward with suggestions.
