Invitation to participate in the
International research and information
network on Children's Health, Environment and Safety
INCHES
On behalf of the Coordination Committee
and the Editorial Group preparing the International
Network on Children's Health, Environment and Safety we hereby invite you
to participate in the development of the network. We invite you to endorse
the enclosed position paper. We invite you to
cooperate in shaping the network and to join colleagues in carrying out
the tasks and activities of the network.
At the 1st International Conference on Children's Environment and Health
in Amsterdam 11-13 August 1998 a special workshop was devoted to discuss
the needs and opportunities for establishing an international research
and information network on Children's Health and Environment. The workshop
was organized by the Dutch Association for Environmental Medicine and Childwatch
International, with support from the United States Environmental Protection
Agency, the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, and the
European Environment Agency.
A background document describing goals, effects of the environment on
children's health, current themes, policies and initiatives was presented
and discussed. A proposal for a mission statement was discussed at the
workshop and comments and suggestions for the general document exchanged.
More than 50 people participated in the workshop meetings, and there
was a massive indication of interest in the proposal for establishing an
international network on children's environment and health.
In order to develop the organization of the network a Coordination Committee
was established. Also an Editorial Group was formed and given the task
to revise the document, and to send the revised document for comments to
those having signed up as interested. The names of the members of the Coordination
Committee and Editorial Group appear in the text.
We believe that INCHES can develop to become a strong voice for children's
health, and that common interests and concerted efforts can play a significant
role in shaping supportive, healthy and safe environments for children.
We hope to strengthen the network in regions now under-represented, and
the Coordination Committee will strive to identify partners in the South,
in Africa, and in South East Asia. As INCHES strive for support from NGOs
as well as from (Inter)Governmental organizations, it will be a network
with different opinions, but with possibilities to exchange knowledge,
to support those who are in need of information.
Yours sincerely,
Marie Louise Bistrup and Peter van den Hazel
